Samsung today launched the SGH-P200 in the Italian marketplace, world's first Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) phone.

Through UMA, a next-generation technology standard which allows for seamless handover between cellular networks and fixed IP networks (hot spots), the Samsung P200 can freely switch between GSM, GPRS, EDGE and wireless LAN networks (WiFi) for free voice and data communication both in mobile and fixed modes.

The UMA phone thus has far greater mobility, compared to existing WiFi phones that can be used in a limited manner, only in hot spot areas. For instance, with the UMA phone, high-speed large-capacity data communication or VoIP is possible though WiFi in places installed with hot spots such as at home and schools and in places without WiFi, the cellular network is used instead.

The P200 also comes in a sophisticated slide-up design as well as cutting-edge features including 1.3-megapixel camera, a camcorder, multimedia messaging system (MMS), MP3 and file viewer functions.

The launch of Samsung's UMA phone will follow in other European countries soon.

If VoIPWiki is to believed then Skype has been cracked. A Chinese company has gone ahead and reverse engineered the Skype protocol. It has stated that their software would not support Skype's supernode technology i.e. this Skype clone would be a free loader on Skype's network and it would not have the supernode responsibility for helping carrying Skype traffic around the net. This would also enable an ad free alternative to Skype in case ads appear on Skype in the near future.On the other hand Skype has gone ahead and stated that they are aware of the claim but up till now have no evidence to prove its authenticity. The company stated that even in case it had been accomplished, the software code would lack the feature set and reliability of Skype which was enjoyed by over a hundred million users and any amount of reverse engineering could not threaten Skype's cryptographic security or integrity.Already Skype is not quite popular in China and there is a good chance that this company would get support in China and since these engineers have gone ahead and reverse engineered a protocol which was not protected by a patent they are likely to escape any legal hassles.

Available only in purple and white, the feminine 588 sports triband GSM, a 1.3 megapixel camera, and -- as you may have guessed from the external controls -- a music player feeding off a little over 100MB of internal storage with no expansion slot. No word on pricing for the Asia-only flip, but with its lack of Bluetooth and external display, we're guessing the 588 is designed to be a fashion phone for the masses. Vodafone has thrown a spanner into the works of Ericcson's IPX WAP billing solution in the UK, citing both a Data Privacy issue and a lack of a need for an interim solution before Vodafone's own PayForIt solution launches.
Pointing to the 2003 EU directive on Data Privacy, Jeremy Flynn, Head of Commercial Partnerships at Vodafone said "Web site owners don't have the right to talk to visitors and the Mobile Internet should be the same as the Internet. There is a lot of abuse out there and our interpretation of the EU rules is that the MSIDN cannot be passed to a third party except by a mechanic where the user controls their identity and can opt out".Flynn doesn't see the need for the Ericsson IPX WAP billing as it is an interim solution. "Payforit will resolve these privacy issues as it includes sorting user permissions" said Flynn.At the same time, Orange have expressed concerns over the PayForIt solution, technology for which there seems to be very little available public information. The major difference appears to be that PayForIt ties a mobile phone to a credit card for mobile payments, whilst Ericsson's IPX solution allows consumers to purchase items via a WAP transaction that get billed via premium SMS or direct to the mobile bill (Pay Per Event).
According to sources, taking into account variations connected to tariff rate and volume, payouts on content paid for by the Payforit scheme will be 5% to 10% lower than using existing premium SMS for billing."This will have a huge impact on take-up of the scheme," said a source. "Orange has totally missed the point. There'll be no reason for content providers to move from premium SMS."Another source who wished to remain anonymous told the NOC: "This proves the point that some mobile operators are not interested in the third party content business."Ercisson's Peter Garside agrees that the IPX solution is an interim one, whilst at the same time expressing a desire on the part of content providers to explore this market. As a content provider myself, I have long decried the lack of WAP to SMS connectivity, and the hoops needed to go through to 'register' a mobile number to allow customers to buy content from WAP sites.Some providers, notably T-Mobile, do provide a mechanism to pass non-identifying information about WAP customers to third party content providers, but only by prior agreement between T-Mobile and the content provider. Such services, such as my own GTIP WAP service are transparent to T-Mobile users, providing a seamless integration betweem the WAP experience and the SMS experience, something that I believe is desperately needed if WAP sales are ever to really become popular.Oddly the architecture behind PayForIt and similar services looks a lot like an implementation of the concept of Transient Identity, where there is a disconnect between the vendor and the customer that is handled by an interstitial party, in this case the PayForIt service, however in this case it disconnects to the consumer entirely, relying on the PayForIt service to provide all billing and reconciliation services for all goods purchased online.

While the advances in Cellular/Mobile technology enables us to do more with our handsets and serve to enhance our standards of communication, it should be noted that at times the misuse of our phones can have much more of an effect than first realised.

With current phones enabling the capture of video, it appears that for a minority, the temptation to abuse a feature of our handsets becomes too hard to resist.

A growing trend has seen people taking part in quite cruel group actions, that of course results in what usually happens to be an innocent individual being quite seriously hurt and in extreme cases leading to fatalities.

The future of our phones could mean smaller or infact larger handsets.
Naturally the trend and expectation is for new technology to generally become smaller and lighter in weight but at the same time with more features packed in.

We generally require and expect an all in one tool, much like a Swiss army knife that we can carry around easily, yet still have a multitude of use from.

But if manufacturers are to add more newer features to our handsets there will be a point where it cannot all be squeezed into one small and neat gadget.

Texting, for example is something that now is so common place that huge numbers of us use texting as our primary form of communication with our phones.
Having said that, if the keypad on a handset is positioned in a less than desirable place, then it can infact make texting less practical for some and lead to discomfort in the hand for people who find themselves using texting as their chosen and favourite form of quick communication.

Of course texting is only one of the many features now seen as standard on our phones, but if our phones become less practical to use, then it wont matter what our handsets can do if we cant use them comfortably.

Doctor Who fever hits us again, with the new series airing on saturday in the U.K
Last years series got a lot of people hooked, myself included.
Having not been a fan of the Doctor Who series as a youngster, it has to be said that the quality of last years series and the taster of what is to come this weekend looks to be setting a solid foundation for further series's in the years to come.
